Date Set for Election in Grenada

Court of ArmsIn an attempt to win what might be the toughest match of his career, spin bowler, former national cricketer and Grenada's current Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell stepped up to the pitch and delivered a fast ball by calling a snap election.

After much speculation, the New National Party (NNP) announced that Grenada's next general election will take place in 38 days. In a June 1 meeting in Gouyave, Prime Minister Keith Mitchell announced the July 8,2008 election date and stated that it will be a day of liberation.

The 2008 election is expected to be a two team contest between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the ruling party, the NNP. Amid accusations of corruption within the Keith Mitchell led NNP administration, the NDC is expected mount a challenge stronger than any the NNP has faced since taking office in 1995.

In a press release following the announcement, leader of the NDC, Tillman Thomas expressed relief with the news and highlighted his party's willingness to bring about change and accountability to the Spice Isle.

While the NNP's decision appears as an act of desperation, it is also one of good strategy. It is no secret that the Mitchell administration is gradually losing support  as global economic factors  drive up food and fuel prices. This has increased  the cost of living for Grenadains who in turn blame the ruling administration. In addition to the difficult economic conditions, within the last six months Grenada has experienced a crime wave unlike any other period in the nation's democratic history. It is evident that time is the NNP's greatest enemy as conditions in Grenada worsen.

Calling a snap election was the best decision the NNP made given the current conditions in Grenada. Whether this decision will result in a NNP victory after the final inning remains to be seen.
